The Psalm That Inspired Nick Vujicic, Bono, and Millions Worldwide

Nick Vujicic was born with no arms and no legs.

Today, he fills stadiums, arenas, and convention centers around the world.

And he does it with a simple message.

God has a purpose for every life, even one born without arms and legs.

Nick Vujicic, the movie

On September 25, “No Limbs, No Limits: The Nick V Story,” is being released by Fathom Entertainment.

The movie will play in hundreds of theaters nationwide.

When you see and hear Nick, you can’t believe your eyes or ears, because…

  • He walks and dances.
  • He skateboards.
  • He plays soccer.
  • He surfs.

And yet, growing up, it all looked hopeless. He was afraid he’d…

  • never be loved
  • never be secure
  • never have a family

But that all changed when he cried out to God.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.”
— Ps 40:1-3

Nick cried out to God. He wasn’t healed physically, but he was transformed spiritually. And a new kind of power swept over him. The kind of power we admire when a person defies pain, suffering, and loss while moving their life forward with optimism.

So Nick stands with no legs and no arms. But he stands with power. He speaks, stands, and dances before millions, proclaiming…

  • “The greatest disability is a lack of hope.”
  • “I don’t want arms and legs. I want purpose.”
  • “If you can’t get a miracle, become one.”
  • “Don’t put a question mark where God has put a period.”

And his message echoes Psalm 40.

  • God lifts us out of the pit.
  • God gives us purpose.
  • God puts a new song in our mouths.

The same thing happened to Bono, one of the world’s most influential rock musicians.

Bono’s Song of Hope

Like Nick Vujicic, Bono has spent decades filling stadiums with songs rooted in hope.

As U2 finished recording War, Bono turned to Psalm 40 for inspiration. Those verses became the lyrics of U2’s “40,” one of the band’s most beloved concert closers.

More than forty years later, audiences around the world still sing those words after the band leaves the stage.

How does God lift us out of a pit?

Something very special happens when we cry out to God.

Like the psalmist David, who wrote, “He turned to me and heard my cry,” we can experience God’s help.

That’s why I shared Nick Vujicic’s story with more than 300 campers at a special-needs water sports camp this summer.

For more than two decades, Nick Vujicic has traveled the world, speaking in more than 85 countries and reaching hundreds of millions with a message of hope.

And his message comes straight from Psalm 40.

  • God hears our cry.
  • He lifts us up, sometimes by changing our circumstances and sometimes by sending the right people into our lives.
  • Then he puts joy in our hearts.
  • A new song in our mouths.
