Face it. That’s what much of our life is about. Investments.
Investments that . . .
- fulfill our dreams (education/housing)
- maximize our pleasures (relationships/technology)
- insulate our fears (healthcare)
Imagine you just received one of those invitations advertising a dinner seminar for the best investment you could ever make. But, the speaker is quite unique.
It’s Jesus.
Investment party like no other
And look who’s invited.
The financial experts of the first century. All the wealthy and well-heeled business folks.
Jesus knew they loved to make money. And he has a deal for them.
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. (Mat 9:9-10)
Within minutes of accepting the invitation, Matthew sponsors a dinner party at his house. He invites, of course, all his friends.
I don’t know about you, but I have found the best parties to be those heavily attended by sinners.
These are the kind of gatherings our guest speaker frequented because he understood their passion about . . .
Within minutes of Matthew’s dinner party, Jesus . . .
- raises a synagogue leader’s daughter from the dead
- heals a woman’s twelve-year-old bleeding problem
- restores the sight of two blind men
- makes a mute man speak
. . . all of which the tax collectors and sinners are not expecting to see.
Our special guest, Jesus, left these first-century financial advisers stunned.
“They went out and spread the news about him all over that region. The crowd was amazed and said, ‘Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.'” (Mat 9: 31-33)
Investment offer, no one should refuse
Here comes the investment offer, which has moved from Matthew’s house to the lake.
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. . .’The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.'” Matthew 13: 44-46
There it is!
An investment worth sacrificing everything else for.
Better than pure gold
What is it?
The kingdom of heaven.
What is that?
It is the supreme relationship a man or woman could ever have.
One with God.
Perfect love and relationship with the Creator of all worlds and all mankind.
How do you make this investment?
Trusting your life now and forever to Jesus Christ.
“Now for a little while you may have had to endure grief in all kinds of trials. These have come, so that your faith, of greater worth than gold may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” 1 Peter 1: 3-5
Why doesn’t everybody make this investment? Because . . .
“Many folks settle for too little. Many miss the best in life not because they want too much but because they settle for too little.” Paul Markey
They look for wealth and answers to life’s biggest problems, primarily in the natural world.

And thank you Michael for affirming the topic of treasures in Christian faith which will unfold here over the coming weeks and months.
It is not only the best investment we can make it is the only investment we make with our life and that is fulfilling.
Well said Larry. What a joy it is to realize that God connects with us lovingly through His Son.
