God spoke to me this morning.
“I want to show you something.”
He walks me through the morning light along the trees down to the shoreline.
Early mist floats above the water. Soft light bathes the shore.
It’s an early morning at the lake. Temp is 78, no wind.
Coffee pot and cup in hand, I step onto the jet ski from the dock.
No hurries. Start the engine and slow reverse floats me away from the shady dock.
Morning-light message
Dawn-lit water greets me like a trusted friend.
Pour a half cup, set the pot in the foot board and nudge the gas. 4 mph crawl.
Sip and soak the morning light glimmering on lake bubbles through shoreline trees. The light paints their images on glassy water.
A fisherman gently casts into a canvas of colors.
A doe feeding her fawn glances a welcome smile and the egret glides by.
And now a message from God.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17
Gifts from God
I love that. “Father of heavenly lights.”
God commands the heavenly lights.
The sun and moon and earth are exactly in the right position for you and me.
“Have you ever in your life commanded the morning, and caused the dawn to know its place, that it might take hold of the ends of the earth?” Job 38:12
He greets us every day like a father.
Goodness all around him. Light all around Him.
He comes with gifts and they are perfect.
He doesn’t change despite the shifting world shadows.
All we have to do, along with other great spirits roaming the earth, is catch His freshness.
Great spirits now on earth sojourning; He of the cloud, the cataract, the lake, Who on Helvellyn's summit, wide awake, Catches his freshness from Archangel's wing John Keats
Snatch daily inspiration in the morning light.
God knows we need it.
God is good
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him, there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5
No evil and nothing ugly about God.
All through the Bible, God inspired humans to reflect upon his nature like light.
Light rays travel in a straight line. Materials like air and water bend light. But, God doesn’t bend or shift.
He’s looking at us every day.
- Sunrise and sunset
- Moonrise and moonset
Predictable patterns and predictable seasons remind us that life has design and direction.
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.” Daniel 2:20-22
Jet-ski cruising early in the morning nourishes my soul.
What are your favorite outdoor retreat?
Beautiful words and photos, Steve. I love to walk the beach at sunrise when in Destin. It’s my favorite spot to marvel at God’s creative beauty and His freshness. “His mercies are new Every Morning!”
Thank you for that beautiful comment Yvette. There’s a special sense of God’s presence at the beach or the lake or a great river early in the morning.
Steve – Good advice: “Try and get outside everyday” – Sometimes I think the heat gets a little overblown – Staying in the AC (house) all day is in fact bad for the soul…
The only time I may not get outside is if it’s freezing! Thanks Jeff.

Thank you Kim.
