In a Wall Street Journal Magazine interview (9/29/2021), Tom Brady mused over life’s biggest questions.

Here’s my take next to his condensed answers.

What’s one sentence that sums up your life philosophy?

Tom Brady: I heard a really good saying, “Life exists somewhere between effort and surrender.” We think we’re always in control. And what we realize in life is that we’re so little in control of things.

Steve Blaising: Everything is possible for one who believes. Even when suffering, faith puts anyone into the domain of possibility.

Who’s the one person you call in a crisis?

Tom Brady: I’d probably call my friend Alex [Guerrero]. He’s very calm. He’s got a really clear sense of what to do in tough situations.

Steve Blaising: Depends on the issue and who’s available. 1. Judy 2. My brother Craig 3. My son Jack.

Who is the one person, role model or mentor who inspired you?

Tom Brady: David Aguirre, this older kid–I wanted to be like him. We played baseball; we played football. As I got older it all kind of went back to those moments when I was 8 years old, on the street with my friends.

Steve Blaising: Three. My father who looked me in the eye over and over saying, “You got to get your college education.” My brother who said, “Keep your eye on Him (God). He brings meaning to all the changes.” A mentor, Fred Ricketts, who said, “All your talent is under your skin. They can’t take that away.”

What’s one thing you wish you had more control of?

Tom Brady: I wish I could sleep in longer. Too often I’m up at 4:30 or 5. I wish I could get a great night’s sleep every night.

Steve Blaising: Aging. It’s interesting all the changes that start at 60. So, I’m going to a functional medicine institute that says the key to successfully treating ailments is physics, not chemistry.

What’s one song do you play most often to put yourself in a good mood?

Tom Brady: I listen to a lot of Jack Johnson; he kind of has this surfer vibe, and it’s very mellow but very empowering.

Steve Blaising: Coldplay’s “Higher Power” because the universal message is we have a higher power. Higher power is wonderfully present if you meet God on His terms.

What is the one thing you would grab from your house, after family members and pets, if it caught fire?

Tom Brady: Obviously, the rings, but also my watch collection.

Steve Blaising: Password list.

What’s the one thing that keeps you motivated after all these years?

Tom Brady: My mentors keep me motivated. The people who are there for me when I question my own ability. The fact that I can still represent them, even though I’ve gotten a little older.

Steve Blaising: The fact that my stories matter just like yours and this fires me up to share as many as I can until God calls me home.
