Achieving big goals comes down to using small drops of time wisely.
Two fresh reminders speed you closer to great goals.
Big goal shortcut #1: Use your calendar to buy time
The trick is to get to the calendar before anyone else does.
How easy is this with our phones?
The calendar reminds us to use the time or lose it.
I don’t know about you, but it’s hard for me to live one day at a time. I try to live whole years at a time. Sometimes whole years in a moment. And I think this happens when I see the moth of time and the rust of decay destroying the present.
And so I schedule reading and meditation like I schedule work.
“A very original person must shape life, make a schedule and allow reflection, study and creativity.” Garry Wills
Big goal shortcut #2: Prioritize small daily steps
I came across this quote on how to do big things in small bites of time.
“A small daily task, if it be really daily, will beat the labors of a spasmodic Hercules.” Anthony Trollope
Anthony was an English novelist who knew that the only requirement for achieving big goals was “the power of the water drop to hollow the stone.”
Dr. Charles Eliot, the record-setting 40-year President of Harvard University, knew “the power of the water drop.”
Big goal shortcut #3: 15-minute reading plan
He believed anyone could receive a liberal arts education by reading the great classics in only fifteen minutes a day.
So, a New York publisher challenged him to compile a list of books and a 15-minute-a-day reading plan.
The Harvard Universal Classics, aka Dr. Eliot’s Five Foot Shelf, was published in 1909.
And in 15 minutes a day, you can read the world’s greatest classics with writers like…
- Cellini in his dealings with princes and pontiffs.
- Benjamin Franklin in his homely philosophies.
- Cicero in his oracles before the Roman Senate.
- Don Quixote in his eccentric humor.
“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.” Dr. Charles Eliot
