It&#8217;s their sense of not crowding the air.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, they stop stretching and thicken their base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trees that don&#8217;t grow healthy roots don&#8217;t connect.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like loners, they suffer from isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Secret #2:<\/span>  Why trees last<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Texas Freeze in February 2021, disease and beetles attacked two of my trees.  One died, or appears to have died, and the other fought back valiantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference?  My arborist said, &#8220;survival instinct.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Oaks have bitter tannins in their bark.<\/li><li>Willows produce salicylic acid (precursor of aspirin).<\/li><li>Pines pump protective chemicals through sap.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>&#8220;It takes an hour or so before defensive compounds reach the leaves to spoil the pest&#8217;s meal.  Trees live their lives in the really slow lane, even when they are in danger.  But this slow tempo doesn&#8217;t mean that a tree is not on top of what is happening in different parts of its structure.&#8221;<\/strong>  Peter Wohlleben, <em>The Hidden Life of Trees<\/em>, p. 6<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Survival systems around trees originate from the hand of God.  And when we see them every day, trees remind us of God&#8217;s goodness, protection and care. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.&#8221;  <\/strong>Psalm 74:16-17<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>No accident could produce a complex and orderly world of beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the location of the earth relative to the sun, moon and other planets is <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/blow-your-mind-over-the-miracle-of-the-moon\/\"><em>slightly<\/em> off<\/a>, the trees and you and me are not here.  A foundational principle of survival is faith.  Faith that grows deep and is nurtured over long seasons and all seasons like a well rooted tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Secret #3:<\/span>  Why trees thrive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>&#8220;Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.&#8221;<\/strong>  Genesis 2:9<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Trees know their source.
