{"id":9317,"date":"2022-01-31T15:22:03","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T21:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/?p=9317"},"modified":"2026-07-02T16:41:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T21:41:19","slug":"tap-into-everyday-happiness-with-three-secrets-from-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/tap-into-everyday-happiness-with-three-secrets-from-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Tap Into Everyday Happiness with Three Secrets Trees Teach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Happiness often eludes us because we overlook the life lessons trees teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, the trees around Lake Athens have continued to remind me of these timeless lessons, in every season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"762\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Trees-at-Lake-Athens-1024x762.jpg\" alt=\"Everyday happiness through trees\" class=\"wp-image-20009\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Trees-at-Lake-Athens-1024x762.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Trees-at-Lake-Athens-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Trees-at-Lake-Athens-768x572.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Trees-at-Lake-Athens.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Trees quietly teach resilience, connection, and everyday happiness.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not soak up the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/daily-rituals-reduce-anxiety\/\">happy habits<\/a> of trees and plant them in your soul?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-why-trees-live\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Why trees live <\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know that trees share nutrients in a way that creates longevity even in a severe drought?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forests thrive because sick members feed and care for each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t ask a tree who it should care for.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They connect where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when a tree is cut down, root systems stay alive for years and shoots reappear long after we are gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail.&#8221;<br> \u2014 Job 14:7<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trees can survive after they are cut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They connect deep in the turf.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An arborist told me that tree branches grow until they touch a neighboring tree.  It&#8217;s their sense of not crowding the air.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, they stop stretching and thicken their base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trees that don&#8217;t <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/3-essentials-for-a-wealthy-and-peaceful-life\/\">grow healthy roots<\/a> don&#8217;t connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like loners, they suffer from isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-why-trees-last\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Why trees last<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the Texas Freeze in February 2021, disease and beetles attacked two of my trees.  One died, or appears to have died, and the other fought back valiantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference?  My arborist said, &#8220;survival instinct.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oaks have bitter tannins in their bark.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Willows produce salicylic acid (precursor of aspirin).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pines pump protective chemicals through sap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It takes an hour or so before defensive compounds reach the leaves to spoil the pest&#8217;s meal. Trees live their lives in the really slow lane, even when they are in danger. But this slow tempo doesn&#8217;t mean that a tree is not on top of what is happening in different parts of its structure.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Peter Wohlleben, <em>The Hidden Life of Trees<\/em>, p. 6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-to-survive-the-desert-without-the-desert-living-in-you\/\">Survival<\/a> systems around trees originate from the hand of God. And when we see them every day, trees remind us of God&#8217;s goodness, protection, and care. The forest and all living things on earth don&#8217;t exist without God&#8217;s doing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Ps 74:16-17<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No accident could produce a complex and orderly world of beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the location of the Earth relative to the Sun, Moon, and other planets is&nbsp;slightly&nbsp;off, the trees and you and I are not here. A foundational principle of survival is faith. Faith that grows deep and is nurtured over long seasons and all seasons like a well-rooted tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-why-trees-thrive\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Why trees thrive<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.&#8221; <br>\u2014 Gen 2:9<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trees know their source.
