Stuck in past choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The old man challenges Gordon to listen why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>&#8220;What the owners of the voices on the tape had in common, it seemed to me, was unhappiness.  The man who spoke first, evidently had suffered some kind of business loss or failure; he berated himself for not having worked harder, for not having looked ahead.  The woman who spoke next had never married because of a sense of obligation to her widowed mother; she recalled bitterly all the material chances she had let go by.  The third voice belonged to a mother whose teen-age son was in trouble with the police; she blamed herself endlessly.&#8221;<\/strong>  Arthur Gordon,  <em>A Touch of Wonder<\/em>  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Turning off the recorder, the old friend asks if heard the two words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two words trapping folks in a lifetime of regret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">&#8220;If only&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All three repeated &#8220;if only&#8221; over and over, locking them in misery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If only . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I had<\/li><li>I chose<\/li><li>I moved <\/li><li>I waited<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How debilitating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the old man looks at Gordon and says . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>&#8220;The trouble with <em>if only<\/em> is that it doesn&#8217;t change anything.  It keeps the person facing the wrong way, backward instead of forward.  It wastes time.  In the end, if you let it become a habit, it can become a real roadblock and an excuse for not trying anymore.&#8221; <\/strong>Arthur Gordon, <em>A Touch of Wonder<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Mistakes?
