My dad is 94 and just recently took a turn for the worse with heart failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is hard for me. \u00a0Besides the rest of my family, Dad is the most loving person I know.<\/p>\n\n\n

My sister, Joy, is his caretaker, and she called to tell me that Dad has fluid on his lungs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

They are running tests in the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I told her I\u2019d be there right away, and she said, \u201cJust wait, they are running more tests. \u00a0No need to come right now.\u00a0 Just check back tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fishing reveals a secret about true love<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After I hung up, I grabbed Dad’s rod and reel and walked down to the dock.<\/p>\n\n\n

Magnificent sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

77 degrees.  No wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dad gave me his rod and reel a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An open-face Ambassadeur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was his favorite when we fished together when I was a tyke, using a childproof Zebco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this day, I\u2019m facing dad\u2019s mortality, and I\u2019m swimming with emotions, wondering what it’ll be like without dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stand at the very spot, Dad, and I fished from just two years ago, casting the rubber worm, listening to the old reel wheeze like Dad\u2019s congestive heart failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two geese swim by slowly with a cadre of ducks while the sun dips to water level, lighting the lake in a blaze of orange and pink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right then, my rod tip bends down to the water. \u00a0I raise it high and set the hook like Dad taught me.\u00a0 Oh my!\u00a0 He or she must be a nice one, because the line zigzags through the mirrored waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m reeling like a madman while the old Ambassadeur wheezes and slips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

40 seconds into the fight, the fish releases!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A ton of emotions hit me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know Dad will be letting go of me sooner than I want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I don’t want to let him go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letting go is the key to true love<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I had a flashback to the 2003 movie Big Fish<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The frustrated son in the movie is trying to sort out the difference between fact and fiction in his relationship with his dying dad. \u00a0He thinks his father doesn’t love him because he doesn’t “show it” the way he wants him to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference between my dad and the dad in “Big Fish” is the way my father loved people in ways that let them be themselves. \u00a0Let them go. \u00a0Freed them up. \u00a0“Let go” is the meaning behind the word “forgiveness” in the New Testament. \u00a0To love, you must forgive. \u00a0The opposite is to blame others. \u00a0So, every misery in your life is everybody else’s fault. \u00a0But forgiveness sets you free and frees everyone around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” <\/strong>\u00a0John 12:24<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I guess the big fish <\/a>I hooked forgave me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key to a loving future<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Father\u2019s Day 2007, the Dallas Morning News ran a story I wrote about a unique experience my dad and I had together, titled\u00a0“Make Dad Last Forever.”<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether or not I lose dad soon or later, I figured out how to make him last forever.<\/p>\n\n\n

Every day, you and I are making a movie, and it’s our life for all the world to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have time to add the qualities most admired about our fathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five unmistakable qualities of a great man<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My dad, Claude Blaising, lives the five qualities of a great man.  Always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Even if your dad fell short, you have time to be the person you wished he was.  And in doing that, you set yourself and everyone around you free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
