We need protection when the worst comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But alcohol and drugs feed our despair like a loaded gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, it fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Panic or fear is a fight-or-flight response.  It is the here and now.  It is hard to control.  But when it comes to anxiety, higher-level thinking comes into play.  We all have fear and anxiety.  Some people avoid things that make them anxious, other&#8217;s don&#8217;t.  A brave man will be able to stop his anxious brain from coming up with possible negative outcomes.  The coward can&#8217;t, or doesn&#8217;t, shut his down.&#8221;<\/strong>  J. Norton Ph.D., Anxiety Disorder Clinic, University of Houston<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-higher-level-thinking\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Higher-level thinking<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is higher-level thinking for depression?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Hemingway, it was self-control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;The first and final thing you have to do in this world is to last it and not be smashed by it.&#8221;<\/strong>  Ernest Hemingway<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The same idea was espoused by Jesus&#8217; half-brother, James, with one caveat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-control plus faith.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appeal to a higher level.  Appeal to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.<\/strong>  <strong>If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.<\/strong>  James 1: 2-5<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference between James and Ernest is deference to the Highest Power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that kind of faith, in God, is&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rewarded with compassion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rewarded with mercy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job\u2019s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.
