How do I shake society\u2019s unwavering norms when I\u2019m facing the relentless tick of time? I discovered that the world\u2019s most important question, especially when asked repeatedly and answered frankly, is:&nbsp;<em>why?<\/em>  Why work so hard to capture the dreams I\u2019ve been taught by society to want when I continue to find only emptiness?&#8221;  <\/strong>Selected quotes, Allure Magazine, March 4, 2021<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Three pathways light our way out of emptiness and depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-depression-is-rooted-in-hopelessness\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><strong>Depression is rooted in <\/strong>hopelessness<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The way Cheslie Kryst killed herself is disturbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any way is disturbing. But, jump from a skyscraper?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s despair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end of her Allure essay says it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Now, I now enter year 30 searching for joy and purpose . . .&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depression is often treated like it&#8217;s merely a medical illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Counselling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medication<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But, it&#8217;s more.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a spiritual void.  A crisis of meaningful hope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;When people prattle on about needing to find their life&#8217;s purpose, what they really mean is that it&#8217;s no longer clear to them what matters, what is a worthy use of their limited time here on earth, in short, what to hope for.  They are struggling to see what the before\/after of their lives should be.&#8221;<\/strong>  Mark Manson<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The first pathway out of depression is openness to a spiritual problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-a-smarter-and-brighter-hope\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">A smarter and brighter hope<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine the best way for God to fix depression and answer the tough questions Cheslie Kryst posed about . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>purpose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>meaning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>suffering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How would he do it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take the worst evil away?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take all evil away?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take our free will away?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">How should He appear to speak to our pain, our fear, and our despair?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;&#8230;many who heard him were amazed. &#8216;<\/strong><span class=\"ind\"><strong>Where did this man get these things?&#8217; they asked. &#8216;What\u2019s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn\u2019t this the carpenter? Isn\u2019t this Mary\u2019s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren\u2019t his sisters here with us?&#8217; And they took offense at him.&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp; Mark 6:2-3<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">It&#8217;s interesting to me that God chose to intervene in our world as a carpenter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because carpenters know how to build things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when they are broken, they know how to fix them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Things get scratched, broken, or stained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Carpenters repair them.&nbsp; They glue things back together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Jesus did this with all kinds of women, men, and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">God works among us as a carpenter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reversing pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reversing loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reversing disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">And culminates his stay on earth with his resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, he doesn&#8217;t wrap up all of our problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He doesn&#8217;t wrap us up and take us out of this world with all its trolls and troubles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.&#8221;<\/strong>  Matthew 5: 16-17<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Purpose?  Here it is.  Hope?  Nothing better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a heavenly Father.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have special gifts.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have a lifelong commission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The next path away from depression is to practice your gifts with an unending crescendo of good works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-healing-treatments-for-depression\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Healing treatments for depression<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Internationally known psychiatrist Frank Minirth was one of only 122 North American physicians certified by the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">He authored over 100 books, including the best seller, <em>Happiness Is A Choice<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I had the privilege of taking several courses from him at Dallas Seminary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Here is Dr. Minirth&#8217;s summary for victory over depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accept responsibility for your depression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forget about yesterday&#8217;s losses and focus on today&#8217;s possibilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Catapult depression out to God through prayer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scripture in your life makes a supernatural difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-your-everyday-morning-coffee-walk-jails-the-demons\/\">Walk outside<\/a> every day.\u00a0 Demons hate fresh air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Begin a new activity or pursue a new interest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/why-this-timeless-gift-will-make-your-mothers-hear-soar-forever\/\">Deal with anger.<\/a>\u00a0 95% of depression is anger turned inward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nurture your friendships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet dependency needs in healthy ways.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus on behavior you control with a daily schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Realize everyone is hurting.&nbsp; No one is perfect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Realize a deadly cycle and boldly interrupt it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognize feelings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Realize there is <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-tyler-perry-turns-the-worst-family-tragedies-into-triumph\/\">hope<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stop getting even and start forgiving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Antidepressants are short-term and don&#8217;t solve anything.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The third path away from depression is to follow a valued doctor&#8217;s advice, like Dr. Frank Minirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What have you learned about <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/hemingways-despair-lights-up-a-detour-to-hope\/\">depression<\/a>?<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Depression haunted Miss USA Cheslie Kryst.
