Commitment builds deep roots for success<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norman Cota led men through extraordinary danger by doing what leaders sometimes forget: he went first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many were dying and succumbing to German firepower, Cota charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On D-Day, the 51-year-old brigadier general confronted a group of soldiers pinned down by enemy fire and said&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet us go inland and be killed.\u201d<br>\u2014 Norman Cota<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cota asked the commander of the group, \u2018What outfit is this?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c5<sup>th<\/sup> Ranger Battalion,\u201d someone muttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, Rangers lead the way!\u201d shouted Cota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one budged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They wilted because the first soldier through the German fence was blown away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, Cota ran through the breach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He led them through the gap and up a sharp ridge to a German bunker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After running ahead, Cota twirled his .45 on his finger, coaxing the men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That moxy opened the door for men and supplies to&nbsp;pour in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-2-commitment-turns-conviction-into-action\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">2. Commitment turns conviction into action<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German fire rained down everywhere\u00a0from&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>farmhouses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>barns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>walls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cota approached soldiers taking cover in a farmhouse, and he asked the captain why his men weren\u2019t attacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSir, the Germans are in there shooting at us,\u201d said the captain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I\u2019ll tell you what, captain,\u201d as Cota unbuckled grenades from his belt.\u00a0 \u201cYou and your men start shooting at them.\u00a0 I\u2019ll take a squad of men, and you and your men watch carefully.\u00a0 I\u2019ll show you how to take a house with Germans in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creeping close to the house, Cota raced with the men, tossing grenades in the windows, and kicked in the front door.\u00a0 After tossing more grenades and waiting for the explosions, they attacked inside, and the surviving Germans ran shrieking out the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I won\u2019t be around to do it for you again.\u00a0 I can\u2019t do it for everybody.\u201d<br>\u2014 Excerpts from Stephen E.
