{"id":3837,"date":"2018-12-22T15:37:13","date_gmt":"2018-12-22T21:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/?p=3837"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:53:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:53:16","slug":"what-god-has-to-say-about-your-great-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/what-god-has-to-say-about-your-great-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"What God Has to Say About Your Great Loss"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loss is really painful in the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-large wp-image-3861\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Loss-blog.steveblaising-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"overcoming loss in holidays\" class=\"wp-image-3861\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Loss-blog.steveblaising-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Loss-blog.steveblaising-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Loss-blog.steveblaising-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Our family&#8217;s loss shadows the holiday season\/Steve Blaising\/Lake Athens<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was in a boat launching from shore this past summer when I got <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/searching-for-happiness-but-finding-a-miracle\/#more-3261\">the call<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">My brother-in-law died unexpectedly at 57, just months before we lost dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">So, our family gathers this holiday season with two vacant chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">How do suffering folks&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-to-be-rescued-from-sorrow\/\">cope in the holidays<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-don-t-cry\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t cry&#8221;\u00a0<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s what Jesus told a sobbing mother who lost her only son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSoon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, \u2018Don\u2019t cry.\u2019 Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, \u2018Young man, I say to you, get up!\u2019 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. \u2018A great prophet&nbsp; has appeared among us,\u2019 they said. \u2018God has come to help his people.\u2019&#8221;<\/strong>&nbsp;Luke 7:11ff<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-was-this-baby-god\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Was this baby God?<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Lots of folks probably ask this more than any other time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Can we really believe Jesus said and did these things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">He came declaring, &#8220;I am the way and the truth and the life.&#8221;&nbsp; But what is truth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">And then I got to thinking, the truth bearer is the person who is either true or false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, what does the person delivering the data look like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Aristotle said that truth is there when there is a match with reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus claimed to be God.&nbsp; Does this match the person Jesus was?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHe who has seen me has seen the Father.&nbsp; These words you hear are not my own.&nbsp; They belong to the Father who sent me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong> John 14 selected verses<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">If Jesus were a liar, he\u2019d have all the characteristics of a liar, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">His whole life would be fraught with contradictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">But, Jesus lacks the contradictions in unstable people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, we see love, compassion, desire, anger, sorrow, and grief in balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>His obsession was truth-telling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had no wealth or hedonistic motives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His entire life and teaching are at odds with fraud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe character of Jesus has not only been the highest pattern of virtue, but the strongest incentive in its practice, and has exerted so deep an influence, that it may be truly said that the simple record of three years of active life has done more to regenerate and to soften mankind than all the disquisitions of philosophers and all the exhortations of moralists.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp; <em>W. E. H. Lecky,<\/em>&nbsp;<em>History of European Morals<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-the-miracle-of-christmas-is-history\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">The miracle of Christmas is history<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-3863\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"290\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Tacitus-blog.steveblaising.jpg\" alt=\"Tacitus\" class=\"wp-image-3863\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tacitus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Jesus is not ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">He was noticed early by the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">He was referenced in classical writings by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pliny the Younger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seutonius<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tacitus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lucian of Samosata<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Celsus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">And then the Jewish historian Josephus (37-100 C.E.) discusses Jesus, John the Baptist, and Jesus\u2019 brother James.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">These secular references, of course, are in addition to the gospels, Paul\u2019s letters, and the extensive writings of apologists, historians, and church leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-c-hristmas-was-predicted-over-400-years-ago\"><strong>C<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">hristmas was predicted over 400 years ago<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">God was intent on connecting with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Over 400 years in advance, the OT prophets record&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the exact time of his arrival<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the place of his birth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the type of birth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>his line of descent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>his purification of the temple<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>multiple details about his death<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>his resurrection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">And this is only a partial list but easy for you and I to read and examine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-good-news-for-sorrow\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Good news for sorrow<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Where does this leave the crushed and brokenhearted?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">They can look to the most integrated man there ever was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">By \u201cintegrated,\u201d I mean \u201cwholeness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">In math, \u201cinteger\u201d is a number that can\u2019t be divided into fractions.&nbsp; That\u2019s where we get our word \u201cintegrity.\u201d Jesus was a whole man.&nbsp; Integrated.&nbsp; Consistent at all levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Why does this matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Because Jesus places himself at the center of his moral teachings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn\u2019t say with all the other moral leaders, \u201cthis is the truth,\u201d or \u201ctruth is everything and I am nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">He says, \u201cI am the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"ind\"><strong><span class=\"JesusWords\">\u201cVery truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;<\/span><span class=\"JesusWords\"> he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.<\/span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"JesusWords\">For the Father loves the Son<\/span><span class=\"JesusWords\"> and shows him all he does.
