L. &#8220;Chick&#8221; Williamson who was Chairman and CEO of the Louisiana Land and Exploration Company (LL&amp;E).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I use this tip over and over to survive catastrophes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-advice-1-threats-never-have-to-be-setbacks\">Advice #1:  <strong>Threats never have to be setbacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s face it.\u00a0 Any traumatic interruption is an attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s an attack on your peace-of-mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doesn\u2019t matter if you are running a business or your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 1996 audit of my business was going just fine until I was surprised by an issue in one of our offices in another city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t expect this and I needed a big solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, I erred on the side of urgency rather than complacency which is a good thing when you need to save your hiney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I flew to my father-in-law&#8217;s house in New Orleans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I needed emergency treatment from the best strategist ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-advice-2-stepping-back-is-the-first-step-forward\">Advice #2:  <strong>Stepping back is the first step forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>E. L. &#8220;Chick&#8221; Williamson loved the drama of business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He liked to be in the ring when a fight for principle was at stake and he loved mentoring young and old entreprenurs alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I arrived, freaked out, his approach was to slow me down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Not so fast,&#8221;&nbsp; said Chick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chick wanted me to step back and see a bigger picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, he takes me to the bar and he shows me how to mix an old-fashioned.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-3076\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"325\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Old-Fashioned-blog.jpg\" alt=\"advice over ice\" class=\"wp-image-3076\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Old-Fashioned-blog.jpg 480w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Old-Fashioned-blog-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">The fine art of mixing an Old-Fashion\/istock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">As he demonstrates a sugar-base not to sweet, but just right, I&#8217;m thinkin, &#8220;I can&#8217;t believe we&#8217;re doing this now!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Chick believed in a key principle of problem solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Step back before you lean in.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In other words, the great reward with any problem is to <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/steal-the-darkest-hours-best-tips-for-your-success\/\">respond and not react<\/a> as responding is a deliberate pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Chick leads me to the large elegant living room and we sit and sip our old-fashioneds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;OK, go ahead.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">So, I unload faster than a cheetah pounces on a limping Harvey Weinstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Chick listens steadily and then replies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;That&#8217;s a two drink problem.&#8221; <\/strong>E.L. &#8220;Chick&#8221; Williamson<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Chick didn&#8217;t drink much, so I knew I was in trouble when he led me back to the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">This time, he insists I mix the old-fashioned while he critiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;Bring the fruit to the top.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;Now, that&#8217;s a New Orleans classic,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Back to the living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;OK.&nbsp; Proceed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I finish the details of my problem, and Chick leans forward with a gleam in his eye and tells me what I need to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-advice-3-get-a-big-gorilla\">Advice #3:  <strong>Get a big gorilla<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;You need to add a big gorilla into the fight.&nbsp; That gorilla is your sponsoring company.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/strong>E. This makes sense!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Move the fight from me to the big gorilla and let the bigger guys go at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In my case, the gorilla was the Chubb Corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The force of the audit had been squarely at my local office rather than the home office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Chick&#8217;s advice was simple, but nevertheless profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Shift your foe&#8217;s attention to the big gorilla and let the gorilla take the lead.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong> E. L. &#8220;Chick&#8221; Williamson<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Whatever crises you face, involve the big gorilla ASAP!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Make the problem a fight between your gorilla and theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">One phone call to Chubb the next day woke up a giant on my behalf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-a-two-drink-day\"><strong>A two-drink day<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I shared that story at Chick&#8217;s memorial service in 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Hundreds attended the reception at the Williamson home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">When the doorbell rang, I answered and one of Chick&#8217;s longtime friends looked me in the eye and said&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&#8220;Steve, this is a two drink day.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">What&#8217;s your favorite lesson from a two drink day?<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Extreme crises require extreme advice.
