Great leaders like Richard Jenrette, who co-founded Donaldson, Lufkin, and Jenrette in 1959, often leave golden nuggets to help the rest of us find our way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 24 rules, which always sat on his desk, were read aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are entitled \u201cWhat I Learned<\/mark><\/span>: 24 Rules for a Successful Life.”<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What I Learned: <\/strong>24 Rules for a Successful Life by Richard Jenrette<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Stay in the game.<\/a> That\u2019s often all you need to do — don\u2019t quit. Stick around!  Don\u2019t be a quitter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Don\u2019t burn bridges (behind you).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Remember — Life has no blessing like a good friend!  You can\u2019t get enough of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Don\u2019t leave old friends behind — you may need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Try to be nice and say \u201cthank you\u201d a lot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Study — Stay Educated. Do Your Homework!! Keep learning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Cultivate friends of all ages — especially younger ones.<\/p>\n\n\n

8. Run Scared — over-prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Be proud — no Uriah Heep for you! But not conceited. Know your own worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Plan ahead, but be prepared when an opportunity presents\u00a0itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Turn problems into opportunities.<\/a> This is very often possible. Problems create opportunities for change, and people are willing to consider change when there are problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Present yourself well. Clean, clean-shaven, dress \u201cclassically\u201d to age. Beware of style and trends. Look for charm. Good grammar. Don\u2019t swear so much — it\u2019s not cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. But be open to change — don\u2019t be stuck in mud. Be willing to consider what\u2019s new but don\u2019t blindly follow it. USE YOUR HEAD — COMMON SENSE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Have some fun — but not all the time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Be on the side of the Angels. Wear the White Hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16. Have a fall-back position\u2014the heir and the spare. Don\u2019t leave all your money in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

17. Learn a foreign language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18. Travel a lot — around the world, if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

19. Don\u2019t criticize someone in front of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20. Don\u2019t forget to praise a job well done (but don\u2019t praise a poor job).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

21. I don\u2019t like to lose — but don\u2019t be a poor loser if you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

22. It helps to have someone to love who loves you<\/a> (not just sex).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

23. Keep your standards high in all you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

24. Look for the big picture, but don\u2019t forget the small details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
