{"id":20120,"date":"2026-07-19T09:37:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T14:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/?p=20120"},"modified":"2026-07-19T09:37:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T14:37:15","slug":"young-george-washington-leadership-lessons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/young-george-washington-leadership-lessons\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Inspiring Leadership Lessons From Young George Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I recently watched the movie, <em>Young George Washington<\/em>, and one scene completely changed how I think about leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine, for a moment, you&#8217;re with him on his first high-risk mission to confront a large French army occupying the Ohio Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s October 31, 1753.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s only 21 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Snow crunches beneath your boots as George Washington leaves Williamsburg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty-five days later, he arrives and finds French soldiers en masse occupying and building forts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The risks were extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only a handful of companions. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deep in French-controlled territory. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make an ultimatum with no armed support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No guarantee of diplomatic immunity. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winter wilderness with frozen rivers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depend on Native allies with shaky loyalties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No room for the smallest error<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a mission requiring remarkable courage, composure, and judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens next reveals some of the greatest leadership lessons of George Washington&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/George-Washington-surveying-820x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Young George Washington surveying\" class=\"wp-image-20262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/George-Washington-surveying-820x1024.jpg 820w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/George-Washington-surveying-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/George-Washington-surveying-768x959.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/George-Washington-surveying.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Young George Washington surveys Virginia&#8217;s western frontier. Control the controllable<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way, Washington senses a need for allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only option. Native Americans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The Indians are mercenary\u2014every service of theirs must be purchased\u2014and they are easily offended, being thoroughly sensible of their own importance.&#8221;<br>\u2014 <em>The Papers of George Washington<\/em>, Vol. 5. p. 117<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a looming confrontation with almost no resources, Washington controls the controllable and doesn&#8217;t waste time on the uncontrollable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On November 22, 1753, he met the Mingo tribe on their turf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He makes friends with the chief, nicknamed the &#8220;Half King,&#8221; and asks for his help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief wants him to linger for a ceremonial wampum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When I found them so pressing in their request&#8230;I consented to stay as I believed an offense offered at this crisis might have been attended with greater ill consequence than another day&#8217;s delay.&#8221;<br>\u2014 <em>The Writings of George Washington<\/em>, 19, &#8220;Journey to the French Commandant&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alliance worked as the Half King, and some of his warriors journeyed with Washington through &#8220;many mires and swamps,&#8221; not to mention the pounding freezing rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> They arrived at the occupied French Fort Le Boeuf on December 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Control the controllable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-2-respond-and-don-t-react\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">2. Respond and don&#8217;t react<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French commander rejects Washington&#8217;s delivered demand letter and tells them to leave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the commander got Washington&#8217;s Indian allies drunk and forced Washington out with little aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, Washington finds more Indian Guides on the way back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he&#8217;s so tired, he implores one Indian guide to carry his pack.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except, one of the new Indians sprints away and shoots at Washington and his other guide, Christopher Gist, from point-blank range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gist jumps on the Indian guide to kill him, but Washington pleads for the Indian&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At which time, Gist says, &#8220;As you will not have him killed, we must get him away, and then we must travel all night.&#8221;<br>\u2014 Douglas Southall Freeman. <em>George Washington.<\/em> Vol. 1, p. 320.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, they used a hatchet to build a raft to cross an icy river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"728\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Washington-crossing-the-Allegheny.jpg\" alt=\"Young Washington crosses Allegheny\" class=\"wp-image-20175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Washington-crossing-the-Allegheny.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Washington-crossing-the-Allegheny-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Washington-crossing-the-Allegheny-768x559.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Washington Crossing the Allegheny (1753), by Carl Rakeman. Courtesy of the U.S. Federal Highway Administration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They didn&#8217;t make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So they froze all night on a tiny island until scrambling across the ice the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respond and don&#8217;t react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-3-failure-isn-t-final-if-you-learn\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">3. Public domain\/Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time the battle ended, Washington&#8217;s force suffered about 100 casualties. 30 killed and 70 wounded. The French and their Native allies lost only three men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make matters worse, he botched the surrender terms because he couldn&#8217;t read French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fort Necessity was the only surrender of his career.
