Leave everything behind.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Drive-off-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The best keep going\" class=\"wp-image-14351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Drive-off-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Drive-off-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Drive-off-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Drive-off.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then I told him the amazing turnaround story of Edwin Booth, the brother of Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s assassin, John Wilkes Booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If anyone could ever justify quitting, it was Edwin Booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-the-best-embrace-responsibility\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">The best embrace responsibility<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The leading Shakespearean actor in the 19th century, Edwin Booth, was highly esteemed and well known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In popularity, he was the Morgan Freeman or Tom Hanks of his day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>And then a great cloud covered him when his brother, John Wilkes Booth, shot and killed Abraham Lincoln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guilt-by-association hamstrung his reputation and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Didn&#8217;t matter that Edwin Booth was antislavery, pro-Lincoln, and pro-freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He didn&#8217;t kill the President. But his last name was Booth.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/edwin-booth-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14362 size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/edwin-booth-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/edwin-booth.jpg 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sad times swallowed him from that point on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Married at 27, his wife dies two months later.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marries a second time.  She becomes mentally ill and dies at age 33.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Edwin Booth spent much of his money, on the verge of bankruptcy, caring for his ailing wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-the-best-embraces-raw-talent\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">The best embraces raw talent<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In spite of all this, Edwin did what he does best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He performed the title role in Hamlet at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City in January 1866.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1867 to 1888, Edwin&#8217;s success as an actor and businessman grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>rebuilds his fortune after near bankruptcy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>buys several theaters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plays the title role in <em>Hamlet<\/em> over 100 times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>builds a grand cottage estate in Rhode Island<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite his financial success, Edwin struggled with his brother&#8217;s devastating act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His name was involved in the murder of one of the greatest Presidents in American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-the-best-embrace-good-character\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">The best embrace good character<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guilt-by-association hung over his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, Edwin recalls a day while standing on a platform to board a train in New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large crowd gathered and began surging in line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Folks shoved each other while a young man was accidentally pushed onto the track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the train approached just a few feet away, Edwin Booth dropped his suitcase, jumped down and grabbed the young man and pulled him back to safety, just in time to save his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, of course, they were both upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The young man cleaned himself off and looked at Edwin Booth and recognized him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Oh Mr. Booth, I&#8217;ve seen you in the theater.  I thank you for saving my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edwin Booth took great pleasure in learning that the young man was Robert Todd Lincoln, the eldest son of the assassinated President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;The platform was about the height of the car floor, and there was of course a narrow space between the platform and the car body. There was some crowding, and I happened to be pressed by it against the car body while waiting my turn. In this situation the train began to move, and by the motion I was twisted off my feet, and had dropped somewhat, with feet downward, into the open space, and was personally helpless, when my coat collar was vigorously seized and I was quickly pulled up and out to a secure footing on the platform.
