{"id":12595,"date":"2023-06-20T11:00:02","date_gmt":"2023-06-20T16:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/?p=12595"},"modified":"2025-06-12T17:52:47","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T22:52:47","slug":"rising-from-the-ashes-how-to-turn-your-pain-into-beauty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/rising-from-the-ashes-how-to-turn-your-pain-into-beauty\/","title":{"rendered":"Rising from the Ashes:  How to Turn Your Pain into Beauty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Foster and special-needs kids rise above their pain every summer at Skiin&#8217; With The Galilean (SWTG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Christian water sports camp shines a light on beauty for everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Jack-Bryan.jpg\" alt=\"Rise above pain\" class=\"wp-image-12637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Jack-Bryan.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Jack-Bryan-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Jack Bryan rises above Leigh syndrome in 2019 at SWTG\/Lake Athens, TX<\/mark><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Hope is in the . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>love of God reflected through volunteers <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>water and sun dancing off inner tubes <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ZUP boards and smiling faces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Like a Lego kit, SWTG offers broken kids valuable pieces to rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three pieces that fix broken lives work well for all of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-1-live-every-day-for-your-dream\">1.  <strong>Live every day for your dream<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a volunteer boat captain, I was waiting for my group when an 11-year-old boy walked up and said, \u201cMr. Steve, do you remember me from last year?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I look down, \u201cI\u2019m so sorry, I\u2019m terrible with names.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCollin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then he handed me an inflatable cactus, which he held behind his back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is for you, Mr. Steve.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"759\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cactus-blog.steveblaising-759x1024.jpg\" alt=\"cacti bloom in pain\" class=\"wp-image-3284 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cactus-blog.steveblaising-759x1024.jpg 759w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cactus-blog.steveblaising-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Cactus-blog.steveblaising-768x1036.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>I was speechless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An orphaned boy remembers my name and gives me a plant that thrives in deserts, endures droughts, and survives scarcity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow, I\u2019m thinking this kid is teaching me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do cacti flourish in lifeless conditions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they make the most out of less.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The ancient plant has made a living adapting to scarcity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So is my buddy Collin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a sense, we\u2019re all orphans dealing with our pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet we still search for hope, not just because of life&#8217;s brevity but also because of its incompleteness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to find completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think Collin is saying, \u201cI want to live despite my orphanage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After he gives me this inflatable plant, he smiles and says, &#8220;Where&#8217;s the fishing group?&nbsp; I&#8217;m going <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-you-know-god-is-a-fisherman\/\">fishing<\/a>, and I want to catch a big bass.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hold onto your <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-to-find-wonder-and-hope-this-christmas\/\">dream<\/a> like my friend Collin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hold on every day, even in the desert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll get through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-2-seven-words-rise-above-pain\">2.  Seven words rise above pain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another young boy who found beauty amid ashes is in the Bible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scene is a large crowd filled with wonder and amazement at Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A father, desperate for his sick son, calls out to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Take pity on us and help us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>His son often fell while struggling with seizures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was burned badly and couldn&#8217;t speak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;How long has he been like this?&#8221; asked Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;From childhood,&#8221; he answered. &#8220;But, if you can do anything&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If you can?&#8221; said Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Everything is possible for one who believes.&#8221;<\/strong>  Mark 9:23<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the only seven words you ever have to know.  Remember who said them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belief in God and his unlimited power will take you anywhere, even in the worst crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus emphasized this throughout his ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.&#8221;  <\/strong>Matthew 19:26<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>SWTG volunteers look into the eyes of those suffering the loss of limbs or families and tell them good things happen if they hold onto faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-3-small-victories-lead-to-significant-victories\">3. Small victories lead to significant victories<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>My friend, Nick Vujicic, began life with one of the worst hands anyone can be dealt.  No hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Nick was born with no hands, no arms, and no legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These struggles led to despair, which led to attempted suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Nick survived and didn&#8217;t give up because he put his faith in Jesus and pursued a deep spiritual life.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Nick-as-a-boy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Nick Vujicic overcomes pain\" class=\"wp-image-12612 size-thumbnail\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>He believed God had a plan for no arms and no legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/one-change-makes-a-big-difference-for-your-fear\/#more-776\">afraid<\/a> he&#8217;d never . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>be loved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>care for himself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have a family<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, he began speaking to groups at school and church about the impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-to-demolish-discouragement-in-one-powerful-step\/\">small victories<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He clung to the words, &#8220;Everything is possible for one who believes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then, at 19, he spoke to schoolmates about how to overcome any disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, he spoke at other schools and churches.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He chalked up his accounting degree at 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, his company, <em>Life Without Limits<\/em>, reaches a worldwide audience.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Nick-Viujicic-swimming-copy-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Nick Vujicic overcomes pain\" class=\"wp-image-2664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Nick-Viujicic-swimming-copy-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Nick-Viujicic-swimming-copy-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Nick-Viujicic-swimming-copy-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Nick-Viujicic-swimming-copy.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Swimming with no arms and no legs\/Nick Vujicic<\/mark><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Nick has written, led, and achieved . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>8 books in 52 languages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>rallies to millions in 52 countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a happy marriage with 4 children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>His favorite rules are . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you can&#8217;t get a miracle, become one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imagine, every day, what is possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wishing for change changes nothing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good choices change everything.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>What are your maxims for turning pain into beauty?<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foster and special-needs kids rise above their pain every summer at Skiin&#8217; With The Galilean (SWTG).
