San Antonio to Waco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mother&#8217;s outstanding qualities were wrapped inside a volatile temper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unforgiveness locked my spirit for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a liberating three-hour drive from San Antonio to Waco broke the logjam of hurt and set us on the path to a good relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how the drive unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-life-changing-drive\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Life-changing drive<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Back and forth, we spilled emotions, asking . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How could you?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where did that come from?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We were going at it like snakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Somehow, both of us listened between the hissing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I dropped her off, we stood outside the car and embraced for the longest time in tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-life-changing-forgiveness\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Life-changing forgiveness<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedom and joy flooded my soul at that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because for the first time, we understood each other.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/unexpected-messenger-suddenly-appears-at-grave\/\">Years of pain evaporated<\/a> in that embrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I forgave her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after, I learned about writing a tribute letter to your parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty uncomfortable to test forgiveness in a homage letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote about the influence of her&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>values<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>character<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I read it to her in front of my siblings and all the grandchildren on Christmas Day 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-tribute-letter-to-mother\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Tribute letter to mother<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I wanted everyone in our family to know how much I love and respect Mildred Blaising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the reading, I
