They show up every summer, usually late July and August. It reminds me of three things kids need most in a dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-1-a-good-father-opens-doors\">1.  A good father opens doors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dad didn&#8217;t hesitate to lift me high into the sky. He picked me up laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He wanted me to see wonder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He wanted me to see newness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He loved taking me <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-you-know-god-is-a-fisherman\/\">fishing<\/a> because that&#8217;s the playground of wondrous things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subtle skill of adding dimensions is a big deal for kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a magical tool for dads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You merely <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/reinvent-yourself-for-a-brighter-future-in-4-steps\/\">open new doors<\/a> with . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a trip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a date<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>No big time commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It simply involves doing things with our kids instead of for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-2-a-good-father-values-mentors\">2.  A good father values mentors <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dad didn&#8217;t know he was sowing lifelong lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if he ever used the word &#8220;mentor.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He spoke often of Uncle Tommy, his mentor, who&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>took dad fishing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>took dad ranching<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Uncle Tommy opened the doors of wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So dad did the same for me, my brother, and my sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He told us that good decisions lead to a good life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Get your education.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Keep it together.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Trust the Lord.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Thanks, Dad, for reminding us to value\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/3-great-habits-of-wildly-successful-people\/\" target=\"_blank\">mentors<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-3-a-good-father-teaches-perspective\">3.  A good father teaches perspective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone once told me there are two kinds of folks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who see life as a problem and those who see it as a privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This really shows up when suffering.  When you wanna <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/before-you-quit-remember-3-keys-to-breakthrough\/\">quit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s why I think Dad and Mom took us to church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They wanted us to believe in hope, that destiny is all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I read Paul&#8217;s letter to the Philippians when I need hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Apostle had been . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>shipwrecked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stoned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>beaten<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>. . . and yet he uses the words &#8220;joy&#8221; and &#8220;rejoice&#8221; 19 times while chained in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He saw problems as an advantage for his cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Now I want you to know, my brothers, that what has happened to me has, in effect, turned out to the advantage of the gospel.&#8221; <\/strong> Philippians 1:12, PHILLIPS<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-to-make-your-dad-last-forever\/\">Dad<\/a> always said . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Finish what you start.&#8221;  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Stay with it.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Don&#8217;t quit.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What are you saying to inspire kids?<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A seven-year-old boy laughed one summer night when his father held him high to the stars. &#8220;Look, son!&#8221; Just then, a white flame skirted across the astonished heavens.
