Thus, every great event is celebrated in public dances which are accompanied with songs and music suited to the occasion.&#8221;<\/strong>  <em>The Interesting Narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiano<\/em>, p. 34<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Facing <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-to-demolish-discouragement-in-one-powerful-step\/\">pain<\/a> is the beginning of survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Clap #2:  Jazz relates to stength<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jazz is rebellion against suffering; not denial, rebellion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>&#8220;Time and again, whites watched almost uncomprehendingly as slaves used sound and coordinated bodily movements to turn work into performance.&#8221; <\/strong> Arthur Singleton, <em>Sounds of Slavery<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;field call&#8221; and the &#8220;complaint call&#8221; gave birth to the blues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Belton Sutherland&#039;s field holler 1978\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6S6RHL1jWuM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of the blues, jazz was born like an unbroken mast in the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ponder this spiritual, &#8220;Lord Don&#8217;t Move My Mountain.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse has-text-align-left\"><em>Now Lord don't move my mountain\nBut give me strength to climb\nAnd Lord, don't take away my stumbling blocks\nBut lead me all around<\/em><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Music-making wove through every facet of slave life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Songs emerged as a tool for . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>celebrating events<\/li><li>expressing feelings<\/li><li>remembering history<\/li><li>bringing people together<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Clap #3:  Jazz relates to humor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Humor is a big part of jazz.  Humor is a big part of survival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cab Calloway&#8217;s antics in &#8220;Minnie the Moocher&#8221; ooze silliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He recorded this piece many times including the movie, <em>Blues Brothers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">She had a dream about the king of Sweden;\nhe gave her many things, that she was needin'.\nHe gave her a home built of gold and steel,\na diamond car, with the puh-latinum wheels.\nHi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi-de-hi\nHo-de-ho-de-ho-de-ho-de-oh\nSkeedle-a-booke-diki biki skeedly beeka gookity woop!\nA-booriki-booriki-booriki Hoy!<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>Humor in jazz reminds us not to take ourselves seriously no matter the circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Clap #4:  Jazz relates to faith<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how dark the night, jazz lifts our hope for freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedom of expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Great jazz ushers listeners into great joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How?  The connection between the music and faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where there&#8217;s faith, there&#8217;s hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the potent spiritual &#8220;Nobody knows&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><em>Nobody knows the trouble I've seen\nNobody knows but Jesus\nNobody knows the trouble I've seen\nGlory, Hallelujah\nSometimes I'm up, sometimes\nI'm down, oh, yes Lord\nNobody knows the trouble I've seen\nNobody knows but Jesus\nAnybody knows the trouble I've seen\nGlory, Hellelujah.<\/em><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>&#8220;Without music, life would be a mistake.  I could only believe in a God who danced.&#8221; <\/strong> Friedrich Nietzsche<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I would add, <em>I can only believe in a God who knows suffering<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roots of jazz sink deep in Christian faith.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the founding fathers of jazz music, Duke Ellington, was deeply influenced by his faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>&#8220;His great passion and work sprang from an awareness of the presence of God in all of life.&#8221;<\/strong>  Jana Tull Steed, <em>Ellington: A Spiritual Biography<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Brought up in Baptist and A.M.E.
