{"id":11304,"date":"2022-11-21T08:18:11","date_gmt":"2022-11-21T14:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/?p=11304"},"modified":"2024-12-13T15:32:27","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T21:32:27","slug":"how-to-channel-purpose-beyond-a-successful-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/how-to-channel-purpose-beyond-a-successful-career\/","title":{"rendered":"How to channel purpose beyond a successful career"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A crisis sweeping America is working a job with no sense of purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satisfaction is reasonable at 65% of U.S. workers (ZIPPIA, 6\/28\/22).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But passion is low at only 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Work is of two kinds:  first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth&#8217;s surface relative to other matter; second, telling other people to do so.&#8221;<\/strong>  <em>Bertrand Russell<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Many folks are successful at work but struggle without purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more, retire without purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, I was fascinated by an artist in the 19th century who struggled with the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Tissot painted high-society Paris during the age of Impressionism and mentored well-known artists like Degas. He was immensely talented and successful.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"736\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Picnic-1876.jpg-Large.jpg\" alt=\"Picnic with a purpose\" class=\"wp-image-11320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Picnic-1876.jpg-Large.jpg 736w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Picnic-1876.jpg-Large-300x245.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">The Picnic, 1876, oil by James Tissot\/WikiArt<\/mark><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But, something was lacking.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Restless and wanting more, Tissot left Paris for London in 1871.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remarkable success followed with displays in . . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the Arts Club <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the Royal Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vanity Fair magazine <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\" id=\"h-purpose-source-1-suffering\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Purpose source #1: Suffering<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tissot mixed with the beau monde in London, welcoming guests to his St John\u2019s Wood home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He made works that reveled in the eccentricities of the upper class, like <em>Too Early<\/em>, 1873, in which he depicts the oddity of being among the first guests to arrive at a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"704\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/James_Tissot_-_Too_Early-1024x704.jpg\" alt=\"James Tissot Too Early\" class=\"wp-image-11369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/James_Tissot_-_Too_Early-1024x704.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/James_Tissot_-_Too_Early-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/James_Tissot_-_Too_Early-768x528.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/James_Tissot_-_Too_Early.jpg 1059w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">James Tissot exhibited <em>Too Early<\/em> at the Royal Academy in 1873\/Wikimedia Commons<\/mark><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s so very relevant today with these social codes and cues.  And because he\u2019s a French artist looking at a different society and culture, he can make some of those observations in a way that an insider might not be able to get away with so easily.\u201d<\/strong>  Melissa Buron, Director Fine Arts Museum San Francisco<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Tissot was on the pinnacle of success, or so he thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"332\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-ruins-inner-voices-1885.jpgLarge.jpg\" alt=\"Purpose in Inner Voices\" class=\"wp-image-11328 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-ruins-inner-voices-1885.jpgLarge.jpg 332w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/the-ruins-inner-voices-1885.jpgLarge-166x300.jpg 166w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">But, in 1882, the love of his life, Kathleen Newton died, and he returned to Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Looking for a new direction, he planned a series of paintings in various settings around Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He wanted to sketch a woman in worship using the Church of Saint-Sulpice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Something else happened.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">At the high point of the mass, when the priest raised the host, Tissot envisioned Jesus comforting two people in wrecked quarters.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-purpose-source-2-experience-a-value\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Purpose source #2: Experience a value<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"473\" height=\"599\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/tissotatwork.jpg\" alt=\"Tissot work on purpose\" class=\"wp-image-11417\" style=\"width:118px;height:150px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/tissotatwork.jpg 473w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/tissotatwork-237x300.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Deeply moved, he returned to his studio and worked on a painting for two days and nights without sleep. The result . . . &#8220;Inward Voices, The Ruins&#8221; (above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tissot unexpectedly finds a new motive for his art from what Victor Frankl calls the three triggers for purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>&#8221; . . . we can discover meaning in life three different ways: 1. by suffering; 2. by experiencing a value; and 3. by doing a deed.&#8221;  Victor Frankl<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Tissot&#8217;s suffering seeded his heart for the vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, his purpose was lit by &#8220;experiencing a value,&#8221; his faith in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, his deeds unfolded in a commitment to illustrate the Gospels through his art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"h-purpose-source-3-do-a-deed\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Purpose source #3: Do a deed<\/mark><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He travels to Syria, Egypt, and Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>study 1st century history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sketch landscapes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>interview rabbis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over ten years, Tissot has painted 270 watercolors, a series called \u201cThe Life of Christ.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"659\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tissot-All-the-city-was-gathered-659x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Tissot purpose in healing\" class=\"wp-image-11400 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tissot-All-the-city-was-gathered-659x1024.jpg 659w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tissot-All-the-city-was-gathered-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tissot-All-the-city-was-gathered-768x1193.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.steveblaising.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tissot-All-the-city-was-gathered.jpg 989w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>In 1894, he displayed them at the Paris Salon to widespread acclaim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Men reverently doffed their hats; women wept and knelt before the pictures, and some even crawled like penitents through the show.
